How do I get a raccoon out of my chimney ?

Raccoons sometimes use uncapped chimneys as sheltered den sites, including for raising young. Do not light a fire or use smoke to force them out. Young animals may be unable to leave, and the situation can become more dangerous for both the animals and the household.
Keep the fireplace closed off
Keep the damper closed if it safely separates the living space from the chimney, keep pets and children away from the fireplace, and stop using the fireplace until the chimney is confirmed clear.
Do not trap animals inside
Do not install a cap while a raccoon or young may still be present. Humane World for Animals specifically advises against using smoke or fire to drive raccoons from chimneys and recommends ensuring all animals have left before capping. See Humane World’s raccoon guidance.
When to call for help
If you cannot confirm that the chimney is empty, if an animal is in the living space, or if local wildlife rules apply, contact a licensed wildlife-control professional or wildlife rehabilitator. Avoid direct handling.
After removal
- Have nesting material and debris removed safely.
- Have the chimney inspected if there may be damage or blockage.
- Install a correctly sized chimney cap once the chimney is definitely clear.
